I often quote the literature regarding the incidence of the low back pain in the general population to my patients. Between 49-90% of the people living in developed countries will experience an episode of low back pain in their lifetime. Of these people 20-44% will have a re-occurrence within a year. Research shows that if a person experiences an episode of low back pain and has specific exercise prescription they are much less likely to have a re-occurrence. Now a new study reveals that early intervention from a physiotherapist showed decreased likelihood of surgery, injections, physician visits, opioid use, advanced imaging, and decreased medical costs versus delayed intervention.
